Program Note:

A liquid crystal is a state of matter which flows like an ordinary liquid but maintains a crystal-like molecular structure.  This piece explores the ways in which short motivic ‘molecules’ of ceaselessly flowing 16th notes can be developed into a dramatic form.  They are stretched and contracted, put into different harmonic and dynamic contexts, and placed throughout all registers of the piano. Some of these developments are direct and immediate, while others are the result of processes which gradually lead the music in a new direction.
